Arty Protest

This is a picture of a "Art installation " down town Reykjavik. The main goal of the piece that have been installed at night on the wall a building on Laugavegur, the main shopping street, is to protest against the aluminium industry in Iceland.

It has been a huge concern lately. Dams have been build to furnish electricity to huge aluminium smelters and a lot of small town are fighting to have one of their own because they see it as a source of incomes.... We are almost having a gold rush.. for aluminium. Most of the concerns about this issue are ecological. I personally think this is stupid and that Iceland on this special field is navigating on sight and that other industries might be more appropriate for a longer time.

Iceland on the picture is made out of beer can from the Icelandic brand "Thulé". Try it, it´s good. Made out of Iceland fresh water. All around Iceland on the picture there is names of company involved in the aluminium industry in Iceland.

I think the point of this piece was to protest, but at the end... when you look at it, you forget the protest side. It look too much as an art piece. At least for me.

It is an interesting piece of artwork and satirical in many ways - I see they have to write the protest in English.

I guess you have to be local to understand this is controversial. It is a nice artwork to me.

Thanks for the explanation. I don't think that I would have had a clue without it!
